Playpen for the little man :)

We made a playpen for our little guy last month but I never found time to post this up here.

Using PVC pipes, we sawed, assembled, and glued them up, sew on some fabrics and ta da!! You've got yourself a playpen :) I had other plans for that Initially but couldn't find the time to do any of that at the moment. Probably when I'm free, i'll start with the playpen :)

Till I sew next :)

Michele, do u mind me asking how much u spent for making this? Just want to compare with buying from stores. I would love to try it but not sure if its worth the hassles :-)

Lindsey - You're most welcome Lindsey. Happy making one for your LO

Rosyline - It depends on the size you're making. I made ours at 7 x 7 feet which was huge when comparing to commercial play pens. It still cost 50% lesser than those that you would buy commercially (around 4 x 4 feet?). It also depends on the material of the fabric you're buying. I bought those cheap cotton fabrics from Wah Yoon or you can get from any local textile stores for RM3.50 per meter. All in all for this 7x7 feet playpen, I needed about 30 meters of fabric more or less. If you want both sides of the playpen sides to be covered wit fabric, then buy the meters needed x 2. If you want the pvc pipings to be cushioned, you can always sew on paddings or buy those padded foam tubes from hypermarkets like Giant for example or from Toys'r'us. Definitely worth making yourself if you want it customed or want it a certain size.

Great idea, and you could pick your colors

RTP said...

Hey Becky, yes! You can pick the colours or better yet, if you have the time, why not sew themed ones with felt e.g. The Jungle, A farm, A garden etc etc!

Love it! How tall did you make it?

RTP said...

Hi A, I think I made it about 2 feet high. Just enough for him to hang onto when pulling himself up

Lol!

Mind to share how you did it?

For cheap padding just cut a pool noodle and wrap it around. Love the idea for blocking them from climbing stairs.

Does it tip over when your child hangs on it to stand up?

question...did you use some sort of plastic button/snap to hold fabris to pvc? any recomendations on what to use?

Anonymous said...

I am wondering if it falls or tips over when they pull up??

RTP said...

It doean't tip 9r falls off bexause 7x7ft is quite big and the weight of it will pull the pen down. But my son did start hanging and pulling himself up so whar we did was glue the frames permanently so they won't pull apart. You can also use a adhesive cloth tape to secure the joints.

Hi Carol
Yes I used KAM snaps to secure the fabrics. Just so that it is easy for me to launder them from time to time. I supposed you can sew them permanently or use velcro.

Great job! I'm off to the hardware store.

Can you tell me the total cost? For the same exact size you made including fabric?

Anonymous said...

She already answered that question above in earlier post.

Anonymous said...

No Anonymous she did not truly answer the question, she said it would be about 50% less than buying a 4X4 one in the store, However, every store differs in price, so no technically she did not answer the question. However, at approximately 32 yards of Material. you can bet it will get quite costly. just a thought.

Use cheap colored sheets you can get from dollar store or Goodwill or any second hand store

how much does this cost

so technically PVC pipes will not snap or break when weight applies? I was wondering if I can do this to make fence because our bed / mattress is on floor and now baby is already learning how to crawl. pillows are not enough to contain him anymore. soooo i need fences.

Did you use glue for the bottom letters to stick them together. My kid does not leave them alone at all.
